Delhi Red Fort Blast: What We Know So Far

A high-intensity explosion near Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening has left Delhi on edge. The blast occurred at 6:52 PM in a Hyundai i20 car (HR26 CE 7674), killing nine people and injuring 20 others. The explosion gutted nearby vehicles and caused extensive damage in the busy Old Delhi area.

Officials confirmed that the Delhi Police have invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) after forensic and intelligence inputs suggested terror involvement. Twenty fire tenders were deployed, and the entire Red Fort area remains cordoned off.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called a high-level security meeting today to review the situation.

Key Developments So Far

🔹 Terror Link Suspected

Preliminary investigations reveal a possible connection between the Red Fort car blast and a terror module busted in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir. The car used in the explosion reportedly belonged to Dr. Umar Mohammad, a Pulwama-based doctor believed to be part of a “white-collar” terror network.

Sources say Umar detonated the bomb after two of his associates — Dr. Mujammil Shakeel and Dr. Adil Rather — were arrested earlier in the day, along with 2,900 kg of explosives, including 350 kg of ammonium nitrate, seized from Faridabad.

🔹 The Blast and Aftermath

CCTV footage from Chandni Chowk shows hundreds fleeing after the deafening explosion. The car had been parked near the Red Fort for nearly three hours, from 3:19 PM to around 6:30 PM, before it exploded. Officials believe the suspected bomber remained inside the vehicle throughout.

🔹 UAPA Case Registered

A case under Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA, along with provisions of the Explosives Act, has been registered at the Kotwali Police Station. The blast is officially being treated as a terror attack.

🔹 National and International Reactions

Home Minister Amit Shah visited the blast site and LNJP Hospital, where most of the injured were admitted. He said, “Top agencies are investigating the incident with full intensity.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, expressed condolences, with Muizzu saying, “The Maldives stands in solidarity with India in this difficult time.”

The US Embassy in New Delhi has issued a security advisory to its citizens, urging caution in crowded areas.

🔹 Security Tightened Nationwide

Security measures have been enhanced in Maharashtra, Jammu, and Himachal Pradesh, especially at religious sites such as Vaishno Devi Shrine, Shirdi, and Shegaon. Vehicle checks and frisking have been intensified across all major cities.

Background: A Wider Network?

Authorities are probing whether the Red Fort blast, the FHD explosive haul, and recent arrests in Gujarat and UP constitute one big terror plan. Investigations continue into extensions across the border and sleeper cell operations.
